thankful thursday

today ben brought a box turtle home from work. he found it at the job site and thought samantha would like to see it. he even thought we could make a little home for it in our backyard. but as it turns out, my research shows that a turtle won't survive in our backyard!

well, tonight i'm thankful that we won't have another addition to our family--the fish are neglected enough! but at the same time i'm kinda sad. we played with the turtle this afternoon and she was lots of fun.

so in addition to being thankful that rosie the turtle (yes, i let samantha name her...) will be going back to her home, i'm also thankful that ben said we didn't have to bring her back until monday. so we get the whole weekend to play with rosie. (and a whole weekend to try to keep her alive!) more pictures to come!

oh, and i totally welcome any advice on how to keep a turtle alive! :-)

tuesday tip

when you're going on a fun, photo-op filled, family outing that occurs maybe once or twice a year, and you take your camera, your three lenses, and your extra battery, by all means CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A MEMORY CARD!

simple, yet apparently too complex for me!

yeah.... yesterday we went to the zoo. the two times we've been there were both in november when it was freezing. and being that it was november, not all of the animals were out because it was too cold. so yesterday when we went we were so excited to see the elephants and giraffes and rhinos for the first time. and wouldn't you know, when i went to take my first picture the lcd said "no memory card!" needless to say ben was giving me crap about that ALL day!

luckily for me we decided to buy a family pass this year. so we'll be back--soon! and so will my camera. with lenses. and batteries. and memory cards! so until then i'll leave you with my favorite exhibit from last time!

more than a memory

today is memorial day. a day that to me, used to be just another holiday. one less day of school. a paid day off work. a good excuse to go to the lake and have a bbq.

but this year i see it a little differently. i actually know people who are serving our country right now in a branch of the armed forces. it hits a little closer to home. :-)

so in addition to remembering those who have served...

grandpa k - US ARMY - served in WWII. he was one of the 4 men in his division who survived normandy on d-day. lived to be 83.

grandpa l - US ARMY - served in WWII as a military police. lived to be 80.

love you and miss you, grandpas!

great aunt margie - US MARINE CORP - not quite sure what she did! :-)

uncle eric - US ARMY - served in the vietnam war. he received a purple heart and a bronze star for a 30 hour ambush he was in.

my daddy - US AIR FORCE - served in the vietnam war translating morse code. he was personally thanked by a pilot whose life he saved when he intercepted enemy code.

...today i am also thinking of friends and family who are serving at home and abroad.

cameron (middle) - US NAVY - surviving boot camp right now!

taylor (left) and cody (right) - US MARINE CORP - will be serving in okinawa.

jacob - US MARINE CORP - serving overseas. actually ON the sea. he's on a ship right now!

nate (left) - US MARINE CORP - serving in afghanistan.

peter (right) - US AIR FORCE - serving in minneapolis, mn.

jeff - US ARMY - serving in afghanistan.

to those who have served and are serving, THANK YOU. your sacrifice means more than you know.

carpe diem...

...seizure the day.

apparently that's how ryan interpreted it. because today he decided to scare the living daylights out of us and have a seizure.

he had a slight fever this afternoon, probably due to cutting new teeth. so i put him down for his nap and when he got up later he was still pretty warm. after we read a few books i had to take a potty break so i sat him in a chair and let him watch tv. when i came back in the living room he had his head way back and was staring up at the ceiling so i said "whatcha doin' ryan?" when he didn't move his head to look at me i said again, "ryan... ryan... RYAN!!" it was then that i noticed his whole upper body spasming and convulsing. i picked him up, made sure he wasn't choking on his teddy grahams, and yelled at samantha to get daddy.

samantha lost it. she started bawling.

i freaked out. told ben "something's wrong with him!!! we need to go to the hospital!!!"

ben stayed calm. bless his heart he stayed calm! he took ryan and laid him on the floor and told me to call 911.

"911--all circuits are busy. DO NOT HANG UP THE PHONE. stay on the phone. all circuits are busy. DO NOT HANG UP THE PHONE." seriously?!

ryan's eyes were open, but he wouldn't look at us or respond to anything we did. so then ben said we needed to go to the hospital... but i couldn't hang up the phone! just then the operator came on and transferred me to someone who asked me what was all happening. he sent the paramedics and they arrived in a timely manner. lights and sirens and everything. it was almost a little embarrassing!

by the time they got here ryan had stopped seizing. only he was really dazed and almost in a trance. they checked him (and his awesome hair) out and i told them all of the symptoms and they agreed that he had a febrile seizure, or fever seizure. these are common in children--1 in 25 children has had one. way to be in the 4% ryan! they offered to take him to the hospital if we wanted, but didn't seem like it was too urgent. after discussing our options with them, we decided to stay home and watch ryan closely for the rest of the night. they said it takes about 30 minutes after a person has a seizure to get back to normal because of brain overload. they waited until ryan was a little more like himself, then they left us with some nicely written instructions.

and ryan recouped with sissy (who was now watching him VERY closely for us!) while ben and i breathed!

he was back to his normal 97.7 degree self tonight. we went outside and he had fun swinging and playing with the ball. and he also figured out how to get away with only have cheetos and yogurt and NOT his jelly sandwich for dinner--have a seizure and make mommy feel sorry for you!

hey, what can i say? it's also a good excuse for mommy to have some chocolate and ice cream!

thankful thursday~ketchup style

i mean, uh, catch-up style! it's been FIVE WEEKS (ahhh!!) since i've posted a thankful thursday. this was in part due to my trip to minnesota, having my parents come to kc for a visit, and then recovering from it all! :-)

but don't get me wrong, i have been thankful these past five weeks--thankful for things such as:

1. my family--how close we are and how much we love each other. and most of all, that our kids get along and love each other. even though they only get to see each other about 4 times a year, they pick up right where they left off and have a blast together!

2. midol . . . i kid you not!

3. spontaneously unplanned days at the park. and i'm also thankful that ryan can finally climb up the slide and go down by himself!

4. a daughter that finished her awana book (AND reviewed it) this year. and yes, i'm thankful for the celebratory treat that we got after her awards program!!

5. a photo shoot that went pretty good yesterday!

what are you thankful for today?!

not me! monday

happy monday! it's time for not me! this blog carnival was created by MckMama. you can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.

here's what has NOT been happening around here:

a couple weeks samantha did NOT ask me if we live in “an apartment or a downsizing?” i did NOT have to contain my laughter when I replied, “no, we don’t live in an apartment or a downsizing honey, we live in a townhouse. (seriously, where did DOWNSIZING come from?!)

in all my excitement to go garage saling with my sis on friday, i did NOT lock myself out of the house. i had NOT gotten the kids buckled in the car when i went to reach in my purse for my keys only to realize that they were still NOT in the house. and the front door was NOT locked. so i did NOT have to get the kids back out of the car and walk down to the maintenance office and pay $10 for them to come unlock our door.

this week i did NOT walk into the kitchen to find ryan sucking on lid of the trash can. you know, the one that raw chicken scraps and egg shells go into. ewww...

we are so NOT addicted to cereal that we did not buy 10 boxes of cereal.... when we already had 15 boxes of cereal at home. so we do NOT have 25 boxes of cereal in our pantry now. hmmm...i wonder what i should have for breakfast?!

i did NOT finally vacuum for the first time in about 4 weeks(!) the other day, only to find ryan sweeping the carpet with the dusty broom after i had put the vacuum away. i did NOT decide to not vacuum it again since the carpet didn't look dirtier than it had before i vacuumed!

i did NOT buy samantha a teeny little teaset at a garage sale, so in the last 2 days we have NOT had 3 tea parties. she is NOT the bestest little hostess! and yesterday after she had a tea party with her nana and papa, she did NOT make them pay her 50 cents each. she is also NOT very sly!

so what have you NOT done this week? go ahead--have fun and fess up!

we heart art

if you missed my last post, let me tell you that sara at domestically challenged, 3baybchicks and I'm Living Proof God Has a Sense of Humor, are hosting "we heart art."
'...which gives you the chance to not only showcase your artwork or creative projects, but also your kid's handiwork. You can read the kick-off post here. Prizes for children and adults will be awarded to a few lucky winners selected at random.'

post your art entries on your blog, then link them to any or all of the blogs that i mentioned! or if you have already posted some artwork in the past, just link that post to their websites. but hurry people, today is the last day!

so now for the artistic side of our family samantha and i. (i'm not saying that ben and ryan aren't artistic... ben can make a house look beautiful with his painting, but i don't having any pictures of him. and ryan hasn't really dabbled into art yet, except for his sunday school papers he brings home with 3 scribbles on them...!)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

well you already know that samantha (5 years old) has a creative side if you read this post. but here are some of my favorites that she's done.

this was the first picture she ever colored for me. she was about 19 or 20 months old. it still hangs on my freezer!

samantha was 3 years old when she made these placemats. they're so much fun to do. just take a piece of construction paper, load them up with stickers, and then cover both sides with clear contact paper. if you need to find cheap stickers check out your local dollar store!

samantha drew this nativity picture, which i used for our christmas card, when she was 4. she got quite flustered with her star so i drew the one in the middle for her. and check out joseph's toothy grin!

samantha made this flowers for me a few months ago with her nana. she made them out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners. she even sprayed them with perfume so that they'd smell good!

this is one of the most special things samantha has made for me. it was my gift for mother's day this year. isn't it beautiful?! her nana took her to a class at a craft store and she made me this necklace. she tried to crimp some of the tiny gold beads herself but needed a little help. other than that, it was all her!

samantha also has a wonderful singing voice... she loves to sing and make up songs. here is a video of her singing the star spangled banner when she was 2. she learned this from ben and i singing it around the house. don't ask me why, but we would always sing it. (we don't anymore.)

enjoy!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

it was hard to come up with ideas for me. my main artistic ability is playing the piano. but i don't have any video of me doing that. and i don't have a piano handy so that i CAN take a video. (and even if i did, i probably wouldn't want to be on video!)

but then i remembered that i used to paint. my parent's enrolled me in an oil painting class when i was 13. i won't post any of my first paintings, but here's one i did for my mom.

another thing i like to do is write poems. i mainly write poems for my family members, and some other miscellaneous things, like pizza, and chatting online.

when i got to the end of my book, i had forgotten about one of the last poems i wrote. it was for my grandpa after he was diagnosed with cancer and given three months to live. i wrote this april 26, 2006.

Good Times With Gramps

I remember the good times
That you and I've had
I'm lucky to have
Such a wonderful granddad

You'd come over to help us
With chicken butchering
You'd warn us by saying
"Don't cut the green thing!"

I remember the winter
I helped you with wood
And you'd drive the snow machine
As fast as you could

Trolling down the river
Or at Blackberry Lake
I always enjoyed
The fishing trips that we'd take

The trip to Alaska
Is a memory that's best
Lang...halibut fishing
And that mouse--what a pest

Time spent at your house
Was never in vain
Playing games, vising,
Or just watching the trains

Waving bye from your porch
Hugs, kisses, and whisker rubs
These are special ways
That you've shown me your love

Celebrating special times
You'd aways make a way
To be at parties, piano recitals
And my wedding day

Since moving away
I've enjoyed your letters
But seeing you in person
Is so much better

These are the memories
That I'll hold dear
Thanks for all the good times
Throughout all the years

nowadays, photography is my art. i have fallen in love with my camera and i'm truely enjoying this hobby! even if it's just pictures of the kids! and not only do i like to take pictures, but i have fun editing them on my computer also.

well there you have it! you still have time to enter... we heart art ends at midnight. so get creative! i think i'm off to watch some artistic television..!
