spring

sun. beautiful warm sun

a glimpse of bright green grass

allergies

new life, pushing up through dark rich soil

flip flops

the ringing sound of the ice cream truck

the appearance of little creatures, apparently including snakes

the crying of little boys who don't want to come inside

open windows

short sleeve shirts

the smell of good clean dirt

a tall glass of raspberry lemonade

the end of winter

so why, then, did i wake up this morning to this?!

over six inches of snow?! i hate to think of what summer has in store for us!

what does this first day of spring look like at your house?

wedding mishaps

my bloggy friend ace is hosting wedding mishaps today. and this comes at a perfect time, seeing as it was our anniversary on monday. what an opportune moment to reminisc about the good & not so good events that took place 7 years ago!

at first i was having a hard time coming up with mishaps. all i could think of was crying bawling in the bathroom at mcdonalds 2 days before the wedding because my mom told me we were going to have lemonade at the reception. lemonade. i was crying my eyes out about LEMONADE!! (remember that mom?!) now i look back and laugh equally as hard about it as i remember crying! and i realize i was maybe a slight bit stressed and a tad bit more PMSy!

but as i went through today, thinking back to that day, a few things came to mind.

morning of the wedding: our reception was going to be outside at a park with a big white tent (without sides) for everyone to sit under (the tent was going to be right next to a pavilion where the food and cake were going to be). so that morning my parents and some other people were getting stuff set up. it was a beautiful day! we prayed away rain for weeks before, but forgot to mention anything to God about the wind. it was a beautiful windy day and stuff was blowing around and off of the tables. my parents had the tent people put a side on the tent, but that didn't help with the pavilion part where all the food was going to be. so my parents went home, dug through their camping gear, and grabbed all the tarps they could find. they went back to the park and somehow secured the tarps to the side of the pavilion. although it didn't look the greatest, in the end it was better than all the food flying around!

right before the ceremony some of the groomsmen were decorating the car. that's not such a bad thing, right? until the spray foam/car paint stuff that my soon to be brother in law was using exploded all over the front of his tuxedo. and it wouldn't come out. i was hid away in my little room (so ben wouldn't see me) and i knew something happened, but no one would tell me what. ben's sister was scrambling around to fix the problem and after the ceremony i found out that she put black mascara on the front of her husband's tux to hide the color. and it worked... we were even able to return the tux without additional fees!

the ceremony went pretty well. no one fainted, it wasn't too hot, and ben didn't cry too much (when we were standing there he had tears in his eyes and i was smiling and kinda laughing at him. ahhh... he was so cute!). but... my pastor forgot ben's last name. so at the end when he announced us he said, "...i now present to you mr. and mrs. ben... *pause*...ben...." everyone started clapping so we didn't have to tell him what to say. but yes, we are mr. and mrs. ben ben.

reception: remember how i said it was a beautiful day? well it was... to us minnesotans! but ben's family came from missouri and illinois and they were FREEZING. i guess we didn't take them into consideration when we planned an outdoor reception. but thankfully walmart and target came to the rescue---they were much warmer with their hoodies on!

i originally planned to write about our honeymoon mishaps... but maybe i'll save that for another day!

so go check out ace's blog to read some more hillarious wedding mishaps! and join in on the fun! even if you're not married, i'm sure everyone has a great wedding story!

me? i'm gonna go have a glass of lemonade...

and the drama starts now...

well in the three hours since i posted last, the weather has cleared up and it ended up being very nice outside. so out we went. i got toys and a blanket for ryan to sit on and i started weeding the flower bed (the weeds were starting to look nicer than the flowers!).

samantha played with our neighbor, mauricio, who is also 5. they were having fun playing tag, blowing bubbles, and running back and forth through the house from the front yard to the back yard. when i was done weeding the flowers, mauricio asked if he could have dinner with us so i said sure and sent them out to the back yard while i looked for something for dinner.

after a few minutes passed samantha came inside bawling so hard i could hardly understand her. "he's not gonna have dinner with us. he went hooooooooooommmmme."

so i went outside and he was just coming out of his house again so i asked him if he was going to eat with us and he said he didn't want to. he was going to play with his other friend, and he'd play with samantha later.

so we went inside, samantha had a sobfest on my lap for about 5 minutes, then i finally asked her if she was sad because he wasn't going to have dinner with us, or because he went to play with someone else.

again, crying so hard that i could barely make out her words, she sobbed, "he's my best friend and i just don't want him to leave me. i want to play with him and i want him to have dinner with us too. and ohhhhhhhhh i'm just so sad."

what do i say to that? i have never had to deal with a broken little heart and i'm not ready to either! so i tried to explain to that we need to share him with his other friends and that he needs to play with the other boys too.

but her poor little heart was just so sad. so i popped a pizza in the oven, turned on "friends" for her (yeah, nice mothering huh... but i think i just heard her laugh!), and sat down to blog real quick! hopefully some food, a couple episodes of "i love lucy," and some ice cream and chocolate will snap her out of it! and hopefully i won't have to deal with this kind of drama for a couple more years!

we are finally having some nice weather. it's almost unusual for august, but we're having about 2 weeks that the temps will be in the 80s. then toward the end of the month they're going back up to the 90s.

since it was so nice last night we got to spend some time outside. the kids got to swing, samantha got to play with one of her friends, and i got to escape the mess that is my house!

after a couple hours of playing the kids enjoyed a popsicle, then we came inside and practiced walking with ryan. a couple weeks ago he had his 12 month check up and the doctor told me to work on his walking. he doesn't even pull up on anything yet, so she wants to make sure his motor skills are developing okay. but he has no reason to walk since he has a sister that waits on him hand and foot!

it's quite comical to watch him try to walk. his left foot is like another hand to him --- he uses it more than his right hand! so when we walk with him and he wants to touch something or play with something he uses his foot. so last night he wanted to get into ben's cup and kept crossing his left leg over to try and knock it over. kinda hard to walk like that, ryan!

today is a little rainy, so we've had a relaxing day inside. it would've been nice to take the kids out again today, but maybe this afternoon i'll have to clean a little bit... :-)

three busy weeks.... part 2

the week after heather was here, the kids and i went back to minnesota with her and stayed at my parent's house for a week. we left tuesday morning, july 1st. it was a nice LONG trip, but thankfully we can drive it in a day. the day after we got there was COLD! i never know how to pack for MN in the summer because what is nice to them is now cold to me! but other than that the weather was beautiful while i was there.

yea.... almost to gramma's!

tired from a long trip

a day or two into our stay ryan got sick. i thought he might be teething, but i think it was just a cold because he hasn't gotten any new teeth lately. he wasn't feeling well, so we didn't go do a whole lot during the week besides shopping, of course.

ryan hanging out under the couch
the strawberries in my parents' garden were ripe so we got in on the action. samantha enjoyed picking them and then eating them! YUM! they were good!

picking the strawberries..... mmmmmmmmmm they were good!

two days later we got over twice this many -- strawberries galore!

on saturday morning becky and her family came. we had a tea party lunch for samantha's birthday, so the girl's got to eat inside with all of gramma's nice dishes, and the boys had to go outside on the porch with papa. then that night we had a pre family reunion at the dam, then came home and samantha & ryan opened birthday presents and we enjoyed cake and ice cream. one of the most fitting presents samantha got was a hat from auntie becky that said "little miss chatterbox" on it. if you know samantha, you know that it suits her well!

sunday we went to church, then came home to get ready for the family reunion. it was a little crazy because a lot of stuff was miscommunicated and not planned the greatest. but it was a gorgeous day and it was nice to see family, even some that i haven't seen in 20 years!

monday we went to see my friend's new baby, then it was a packing day! we all had to get everything ready for the trip back to kc and heather had to pack for her trip to alaska.

tuesday morning we left for minneapolis/st. paul. it was nice that we could take our time and didn't have to get up super early. we didn't have to drop heather off at the airport until evening, so when we got to the cities we stopped at subway for lunch, then went to the como zoo. it's a great little zoo. it's not too overwhelming to kids and you can see everything in a couple hours. it's cheap too....! :-) it was fun. samantha enjoyed seeing all the animals, especially the baby orangutan.

lilly pads at the como zoo. they were incredibly huge.

mama orangutan and baby

i love how the giraffe's are all lined up..... like the kids waiting to get measured at gramma's!

after the zoo we dropped heather off at the airport and continued south. we stopped just inside of iowa for dinner and gas. when we were about 10 miles from the exit dad said he didn't think we'd make it because the gas light had come on. i asked him if it had just come on and he said "no, it came on over 30 miles ago!!" i don't know why he hadn't stopped before, but at least we made it there! we got home to kansas city at 12:30am. the kids were so excited to see daddy, as was i. ryan didn't go back to sleep until 2 - 2:30. then we crashed!
